If you have been waiting for a reason to make the drive to South Burlington, here it is: Allison Russell is bringing the In The Hour of Chaos Tour to Higher Ground on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Doors open at 6:00 PM, show at 7:00 PM. All ages.
Higher Ground’s Ballroom is one of the better mid-size rooms in the North Country region — 750 capacity, which means you are close to the stage for an artist who puts everything into every set. That proximity matters here. Russell plays to the whole room, not just the people in the first three rows.
About Allison Russell
Russell calls her music “Banjo Gospel Soul,” and that is actually the most honest summary of a sound that pulls from Americana, folk, soul, blues, and roots traditions all at once. She plays banjo, clarinet, and guitar. She co-founded Our Native Daughters alongside Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Amythyst Kiah. She holds one Grammy win across eight nominations, three Americana Award wins, and a 2024 Juno Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. She completed her second Broadway run as Persephone in the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown.
The tour is built around her third studio album, In The Hour of Chaos, out July 10, 2026 on Fantasy Records. Russell co-produced it with Dim Star, and almost every track features a different guest — Norah Jones, Joy Oladokun, Brittney Spencer, Ruby Amanfu, Sara Watkins, and others. She describes the record as “a fervent plea for connection in this time of alienation, isolation and dread” built to make you “feel GOOD.” After spending the summer opening for Sarah McLachlan on the Better Broken Tour, these fall headline dates are her room, her terms, her set.
Support at this show comes from Autumn Nicholas.
Onstage, Russell is known for talking directly to the audience, introducing her band as chosen family, and turning the night into something closer to a communal gathering than a standard concert. That is a consistent theme across reviews and audience accounts — not a promotional talking point. This is the kind of show that earns the drive.
