Lucero at Town Ballroom | October 14, 2026

By David Chen-Watkins · July 29, 2026

The Lucero that made Should’ve Learned By Now had been deliberate about restraint for a while. Two albums, Among the Ghosts (2018) and When You Found Me (2021), pushed into more somber, eclectic territory. The 2023 record was the exhale. Saving Country Music captured the effect precisely: it lands “kind of like a Greatest Hits album, only of songs you’ve never heard before.” Lucero brings that energy to Town Ballroom in Buffalo on Wednesday, October 14.

About the Show

Lucero formed in Memphis in the late 1990s, and the city’s musical breadth has always been audible in what they do. The band’s range runs from punk-rooted guitar licks and driving drums to what critics have described as Stax-inspired Memphis soul, with brass and Rick Steff’s piano and organ work pulling the sound somewhere that straightforward alt-country rarely reaches. Frontman Ben Nichols anchors it with a voice described as a “husky growl,” carrying both the heartbreak and the defiance of the material. Their instrumentation earns its keep differently on a stage than it does on a record, and this band has had decades to work out that difference.

Americana Highways has called theirs “one of the most consistent catalogs in Americana,” a catalog that includes That Much Further West, which earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s Hot List in 2003, and Nobody’s Darlings (2005), produced with Memphis musician and producer Jim Dickinson. Their most recent record, Should’ve Learned By Now (their 12th studio album, produced by Matt Ross-Spang), arrived in February 2023, described by reviewers as “road songs and late-night drinking dirges” that also begin to reckon with what decades of touring actually extracts. The full band makes the trip: Brian Venable on electric guitar, Roy Berry on drums, John C. Stubblefield on bass, Steff on keys. Joelton Mayfield, a Texan alt-country songwriter whose debut Crowd Pleaser arrived in December 2025, is scheduled to open across much of the fall run.
