The Stampeders arrive at Kingston Grand Theatre’s Rosen Auditorium on Friday, October 16, on a tour whose title tells you exactly where things stand. “One More Time” isn’t the billing a band attaches to a routine anniversary run; it’s the language of a considered reckoning. Rich Dodson and Kim Berly bring this evening knowing they carry not only a catalog that defined Canadian rock in the early 1970s, but the absence of bassist Ronnie King, who passed away in March 2024 and asked, from palliative care, that the band continue without him.
About the Show
The Stampeders were Canada’s predominant rock band of the 1970s — Juno-award winners who served as the country’s international musical ambassadors from 1971 to 1976, touring more extensively overseas than any other Canadian group of that era before disbanding in 1977. They reunited at the Calgary Stampede in 1992 and have kept working since, accumulating SOCAN Lifetime Achievement recognition, five SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame inductions, and a Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction for “Sweet City Woman” along the way. Their own promotional framing puts it plainly: “No seventies group represented Canada’s musical identity to the world like The Stampeders.” That catalog fills the set — “Wild Eyes,” “Carry Me,” “Oh My Lady,” “Devil You,” “Ramona,” “Minstrel Gypsy,” “Hit the Road Jack,” and “Sweet City Woman” among the classics, described by the tour’s own billing as “a veritable soundtrack to a whole generation,” evoking a time of “tie-dyed t-shirts and elevator shoes, 15¢ coffee and homemade apple pie, dating and dreaming.” The Kingston show is the third date on the band’s Ontario run, which follows earlier stops in British Columbia and Alberta under the same billing and now covers 17 venues from October 14 through November 7. Dave Chabot, renowned bassist and longtime friend of the band, has stepped in for King. Tribute stories and retrospective video honoring King’s more than 50 years on the road will be woven through the evening.
