There is a particular moment in An East Coast Christmas when Lucy MacNeil’s voice reaches for “O Holy Night,” Celtic harp beneath it, the siblings’ harmonies folding around her — and those who have been coming to this show for years say it never stops finding them. The Barra MacNeils are five siblings from Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, four decades into a tradition that audiences across Canada have come to call the iconic Christmas concert from coast to coast to coast. They bring the 40th Anniversary National Christmas Tour to Kingston Grand Theatre on Friday, December 4, at 7:30 p.m.
About the Show
The MacNeil siblings (Lucy, Boyd, Stewart, Kyle, and Sheumas), plus bassist Jamie Gatti, collectively play an extraordinary spread of instruments: accordion, guitar, piano, fiddle, bodhran, mandolin, banjo, Celtic harp, tin whistles, bouzouki, flute, and bass. The show draws on traditional holiday selections and MacNeil family favorites from Christmas gatherings and celebrations, moving between rousing choruses that fill a room, hauntingly beautiful Gaelic ballads that pull it quiet again, and step dancing that lifts the whole thing back up. This year’s program includes “O Holy Night,” “Ave Maria,” “Christmas in Killarney,” and “Auld Lang Syne,” alongside original material and hidden gems drawn from 17 critically acclaimed recordings spanning their career.
The band formed in 1986, and 2026 marks their 40th anniversary as a group, the occasion around which this tour is built. They are 2026 ECMA Lifetime Achievement honorees and six-time East Coast Music Award winners, a distinction that comes on top of a career that has included Christmas specials broadcast on CMT and PBS and time on the road with Celine Dion and Kenny Rogers. The Globe & Mail named their Christmas album one of the best five Christmas albums of all time, and the Halifax Daily News has called them “a treasure of the East Coast, rich with tradition and unmatched in ensemble performance.” The 2026 cross-Canada tour includes a stop at Toronto’s Massey Hall; the November 13 date in Sidney, British Columbia has already sold out.
