Kingston in November is full-on Hudson Valley — stripped trees, low sky, just enough chill in the air to make a warm theater feel like exactly where you should be. The Wailin’ Jennys play UPAC on Thursday, November 19 at 8:00 PM. Tickets start at $45.
About the Wailin’ Jennys
Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody, and Heather Masse started as solo artists sharing a bill at a Winnipeg guitar shop called Sled Dog Music. Nobody planned it. That first show sold out. They have been one of the most celebrated folk trios in North America ever since.
NPR said it well after their Newport Folk Festival set: the Jennys are “more than just impeccable bluegrass harmonizers; they’re also terrific bandleaders” who approach traditional roots music with genuine reverence. The records back that up — multiple Juno Award wins, two No. 1 albums on the Billboard bluegrass chart (Bright Morning Stars, Fifteen), and a live reputation built over two decades of touring.
The three voices are genuinely distinct and genuinely matched. Ruth Moody (soprano) brings classical training and a wide instrumental range — guitar, banjo, accordion. Heather Masse (alto), a Jazz Voice graduate of New England Conservatory, plays upright bass and anchors the lower register. Nicky Mehta (mezzo) holds the center with guitar, harmonica, and more. Together they produce what one outlet called “the most beautiful three-part harmonies on this continent.”
Kingston opens a three-night Northeast run — Ithaca on November 20, Buffalo on November 21. You’re getting them first.
