If you are within reach of Saratoga Springs on August 7, here is what you need to know: Sean Rowe is playing Caffe Lena, and a 110-seat listening room is exactly the right scale for a voice NPR has described as capable of crushing granite. August in Saratoga means build in extra time — the Spa City fills up in summer — but this is worth planning around.
About Sean Rowe
Rowe is a Capital Region native, based in Troy, with roots deep in the singer-songwriter tradition. The Wall Street Journal called his baritone “as timeless as his approach,” comparing it to the ecstatic intensity of late-’60s Van Morrison and the stark subtlety of late-era Johnny Cash. PopMatters has put his lyrical craft in the same sentence as Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. That weight is exactly what a listening room like Caffe Lena is built for.
He has shared bills with Robert Plant and Alabama Shakes, made his national TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and had his song “To Leave Something Behind” placed in the Ben Affleck film The Accountant. His most recent full-length, The Darkness Dressed in Colored Lights, was recorded with Grammy-winning engineer Brian Joseph, known for his work with Bon Iver.
This August, Rowe is arriving fresh off a European tour — his first overseas run in six years — and approaching the release of his sixth studio album, Good Fiction. He describes it as born from personal and global upheaval, with stripped-down production and vulnerable songwriting. The first single, “Burn Baby Burn,” is already out. Coming home to the Capital Region in a room this size feels like the right re-entry.
