Chris Smither at Caffe Lena | September 20, 2026

By Nate Calloway · August 25, 2026

The foot stomp is usually the first thing you notice — before the lyric lands, before the verse turns. Chris Smither has built his live performance around that rhythm for six decades: a picked guitar, an amplified stomp, and a voice that NPR once described as “equal parts gravel and molasses.” He plays Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs on September 20 in a Sunday afternoon set that now carries particular weight: Smither has announced he will step away from touring beginning in January 2027, making each remaining date on his calendar something to sit with. The show begins at 3 p.m.

About the Show

Smither grew up in New Orleans and moved to Boston in his early twenties, arriving in the mid-1960s folk scene at exactly the right moment, when the rooms were full and the songwriters were listening hard to each other. He built lasting friendships alongside a young Bonnie Raitt, who later recorded several of his compositions. His early albums on Poppy Records appeared alongside Townes Van Zandt. The listening he did in those years, absorbing Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt, built a finger-picking style inseparable from his live presence: rhythmic, grounded, amplified by the stomp of his foot keeping time. The Associated Press has called him “an American original – a product of the musical melting pot and one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world.”

His most recent album, All About the Bones (2024, Signature Sounds/Mighty Albert), is his 20th and the first of entirely original material in six years. Eight new songs, plus covers of Eliza Gilkyson’s “Calm Before the Storm” and Tom Petty’s “Time to Move On.” Americana Highways wrote that Smither “manages to be profound without being ponderous.” The subjects are the ones he has circled his whole career: politics, consciousness, renewal, family, vulnerability, surrender. Over the decades, his compositions have found their way to Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Diana Krall, and John Mayall. In 2026, Smither made his acting debut in The Singers, directed by Sam A. Davis, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film; it is available on Netflix.
