Daft Disko traces a specific lineage — the groove running from Giorgio Moroder and Chic through Daft Punk and Stardust, then forward through Breakbot and Purple Disco Machine into whatever corner of contemporary electronic music decided disco was worth keeping. The touring French house and disco party makes its Buffalo debut at Rec Room on Saturday, August 22, presented by After Dark Presents. It is the kind of night that rewards anyone who has thought those two eras had more in common than most DJ sets bother to show.
About the Show
The concept is direct: a night built around French touch electronic music and classic disco, drawing from a curated list of influences that spans roughly five decades of the genre. The influences cover intentional ground — Giorgio Moroder and Chic on the foundational end; Daft Punk, Stardust, and Modjo at the peak of the French touch era; Breakbot, Purple Disco Machine, Disclosure, Phoenix, and Justice pulling the lineage into more recent territory. The organizers frame it plainly as “a party inspired by the music of” these artists, which is accurate and doesn’t need embellishment. The argument is made on the dance floor.
The concept has been described as celebrating “the intersection of ’70s disco aesthetics with contemporary electronic production,” which is another way of saying the night runs from Chic to Disclosure without treating either as a curiosity.
Daft Disko operates as a traveling concept rather than a single touring act, appearing with locally augmented lineups in each city it visits. The Buffalo Bunch join the bill here, alongside the event’s rotating roster of DJs. This is the first Daft Disko date in Buffalo; the concept has previously landed in Salt Lake City, Portland, Brooklyn, and Edinburgh. The Salt Lake City run was described as a return, confirmation that the format has built repeat audiences in multiple cities before arriving in western New York.
The night is organized by After Dark Presents, the Buffalo-based independent promoter producing up to 250 live events annually across Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse since 2001.
