If you have been following the electronic and jam scene for any length of time, David Murphy’s name lands with weight. The co-founding bassist and synth player of STS9 is bringing his For My Peeps project to Empire Underground in Albany on Saturday, August 15 — and this is exactly the kind of Saturday night you clear your calendar for.
About David Murphy
Murphy spent 17 years as a founding force behind Sound Tribe Sector 9, the electronic and jam band that built a devoted following on records like Artifact — which peaked at #12 on Billboard’s Top Electronic Albums chart — Interplanetary Escape Vehicle, and Offering Schematics Suggesting Peace. With For My Peeps, he is threading that classic catalog through a new lens, blending funk, jam, and electronic music into what he calls “instrumental stories — deep, immersive experiences that speak without words.”
He is not doing this alone. The band features Kevin Donohue of SunSquabi on guitar, Scott Hannay of Mihali on keys, and Rohan Prakash of Rohansolo on drums — a lineup drawn from the deeper end of the jam and electronic world. Murphy’s stated influences run from Nine Inch Nails and Daft Punk to Pink Floyd, Tame Impala, Empire of the Sun, and Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters. That range shows up in the music — this is not a nostalgia project, it is a living thing built from familiar parts.
The Venue
Empire Underground is a 500-capacity club at 93 N Pearl St in downtown Albany. At that size, a show with Murphy’s catalog gets you close to the stage, close to the bass, close to everything that makes live electronic music worth the drive. Show time is 8:00 PM.
