Empire Underground

Albany, NY

About This Venue

There’s a certain alchemy that happens when you descend a flight of stairs and leave the streetlight glow of downtown Albany behind. At Empire Underground, the ceiling drops, the walls close in, and the bass hits different. This 350-capacity basement venue at 93 North Pearl Street doesn’t try to be everything to everyone — it tries to be the room where the show gets loud, the crowd gets close, and nobody pretends they came for the atmosphere. They came for the music.

Born from Albany’s Live Music Comeback

Empire Underground opened in fall 2021, a collaboration between Stan Levinstone of SLP Concerts and Teddy Etoll of Step Up Presents — two promoters who had spent 13 years running Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park before deciding downtown Albany needed a real venue again. The space occupies the basement of 93 North Pearl Street, directly below its larger sibling Empire Live (capacity 1,000), in what was previously home to the Capital Repertory Theatre. Together, the two rooms gave the Capital Region its first dedicated downtown concert club in roughly 30 years.

The Underground carved out its own identity immediately. Where Empire Live handles the bigger touring draws, the Underground operates as the gritty, intimate counterpart — the room where emerging acts break through, where metal bands rattle the low ceiling, and where hip-hop shows pack the floor shoulder to shoulder. Standing room only, general admission, no barriers between performer and audience.

What the Room Feels Like

The layout is straightforward: a stage at one end, a bar, and roughly 350 bodies’ worth of open floor between them. The ceilings are low enough that you feel the sound in your chest before you process it through your ears. There’s an elevator for accessibility, but the primary entrance takes you down a staircase that functions as a kind of decompression chamber — by the time you reach the bottom, the outside world has disappeared.

The sound system punches well above what you’d expect for the room’s size. Acts ranging from Death Angel and Entheos to bluegrass-funk fusionists like Armchair Boogie have all made it work, which speaks to a flexible setup that can handle distortion and dynamics equally well.

The Booking Philosophy

SLP Concerts and Step Up Presents book both Empire rooms with a promoter’s ear for what’s rising rather than what’s safe. The Underground’s calendar leans into heavier genres — metal, hardcore, punk — while also making space for hip-hop showcases, indie rock, and the occasional left-field booking that wouldn’t make sense in a bigger room. It’s the kind of venue where you might catch an act six months before they’re selling out theaters, and you’ll remember the sweat on the walls when they do.

Getting There and Parking

Downtown Albany parking is easier than its reputation suggests, especially for evening shows. Street metered parking throughout the downtown Business Improvement District is free after 5 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends. For garage options, the Quackenbush Garage and Green-Hudson Garage (both operated by ParkAlbany) offer $5 flat-rate overnight parking starting at 5 PM. The South Pearl Street Garage is another option within a few blocks, with rates maxing out at $15.

The venue is a short walk from the Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station for anyone coming from downstate or points east, and rideshare drop-offs on North Pearl Street put you right at the door.

Where to Eat Before the Show

Downtown Albany’s dining scene has filled in considerably around North Pearl Street. Yono’s, a few blocks away at 25 Chapel Street, is one of the Capital Region’s finest restaurants — Continental-Indonesian cuisine that’s been a destination for decades. For something quicker, Wolff’s Biergarten on Broadway serves German-style sausages and an excellent beer selection in a rowdy, no-frills setting that pairs well with a concert night. And Wellington’s at 144 State Street handles American fare with a polished-but-approachable touch, ideal for a proper sit-down before descending into the Underground.

  • Ages: Check individual show listings — some events are 18+ or 21+
  • Accessibility: Elevator access available in addition to stairs
