Surfaced at Empire Underground | August 18, 2026

By Rachel Torrey · August 3, 2026

Surfaced play metalcore with the muscle memory of a band that came up in pits, not practice spaces. Where Angels Fear to Tread, their new six-track EP on 1126 Records, hits on August 15. Three days later, they play Empire Underground.

About the Show

The band formed in Oldham County, Kentucky in 2022 out of mosh-pit friendships and local shows. They signed to Massachusetts-based 1126 Records and built a touring history that includes dates with Dying Wish, Eighteen Visions, Fox Lake, and Kaonashi, plus a July 2026 co-headlining run with Cable across the South and Midwest.

Where Angels Fear to Tread was produced by Dom Maduri, who has worked with The Callous Daoboys and Mauled. The band frames the record as “grief, confusion, rage, and the wreckage that drags us under — an honest reflection of what it feels like to be young and overwhelmed.” Vocalist JP Kaine is specific about what fed the material: lead single “A Petal of Ash” came from his experience of anxiety. “This song is about panic attacks and how often they happen when you least expect it,” he said. “I deal with anxiety every day, making me scatter-brained and thoughtless.” The video, directed by Errik Easterday and filmed in Louisville, captures “the violent and visceral nature of their well tread stomping grounds, DIY no rules hardcore.” Two tracks feature guests: Serration on “Wasted in Hatred” and Mauled on “…The Weight You Chose to Carry.” Artwork by Alexandre Goulet draws on complex, grotesque imagery to match the emotional register of the songs. Physical copies are available on CD and vinyl through 1126 Records, with olive and beige blood splatter variants.

Press has cited Knocked Loose and Varials as reference points, describing Surfaced’s sound as “blistering riffs, scorched-earth vocals, and breakdowns” delivered with “precision with unhinged fury.” Their previous full-length, Nothingness Forever, arrived in 2023. On the 1126 Records deal, the band put it plainly: “It’s refreshing to work with people who actually give a shit.”
