Emanuel Ax at Eastman Theatre | March 17, 2027

By David Chen-Watkins · November 5, 2026

Emanuel Ax plays Romantic music the way a good editor reads a manuscript — not for the obvious words, but for the ones doing the actual work. His March 17 recital at Kilbourn Hall pairs Schumann’s Papillons with Schubert’s Four Impromptus and a selection of Chopin in a program that tests that capacity three different ways.

About the Show

The Fernando Laires Piano Series at Eastman Presents has titled the evening “A Legend Returns,” and the program earns the framing. All three composers on the bill occupy the Romantic era but come at it from different angles. Schumann’s Papillons is compressed and mercurial, its brevity a test of interpretive economy. Schubert’s Four Impromptus pursue longer arcs and require a pianist who understands how to let tempo serve the phrase rather than the other way around; works that can dissolve into decoration or, in the right hands, cohere into something close to argument. Chopin closes the evening: music that separates pianists who play it from those who play at it.

He is the 2026 Musical America Artist of the Year and Artist in Residence with Radio France for the 2026–27 season, a year that has included engagements at Kulturpalast in Dresden with the Dresden Philharmonic, at Royal Festival Hall in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and touring dates with Yo-Yo Ma. He holds multiple Grammy Awards, among them recognition for his Haydn piano sonata recordings and the Beethoven and Brahms cello-piano sonatas he recorded with Ma; he has been an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist since 1987. His documentary, “All the Music in the World,” premiered at DOC NYC in 2026.

Ax studied at the Juilliard School and won the inaugural Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv in 1974; he now teaches at Juilliard and hosts “Classical Music Happy Hour” on WQXR, a podcast that has introduced him to listeners who may not have grown up in concert halls but are curious about what happens inside them.

The New York Times on his playing: “youthful brio, incisive rhythm, bountiful imagination, delicacy when called for, and thundering power when the piano fought back.” The Guardian distilled it differently: “beloved for his warmth, elegant yet unassuming playing, and self-effacing mastery.”

Venue & Logistics

Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester’s Finger Lakes region is described by ESM as “one of the finest chamber music halls in the world.” For a solo piano recital, and especially for this repertoire, acoustic intimacy matters, and the room gives these works space to breathe without letting them dissolve. The recital begins at 7:30 p.m.
