Jaimoe has been making history since before most of us were paying attention. The first drummer Duane Allman ever asked to join his new band, the last surviving original member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Allman Brothers Band — and on Saturday, August 15, he is bringing his Friends to Colony Woodstock for a night that should not require any more selling than that. Three hours of music. A room that fits 150 people. One of the most important drummers in American music history, right there in front of you.
This is not a tribute show. Jaimoe does not do tribute shows.
About Jaimoe & Friends
Born Jonie Lee Johnson in Gulfport, Mississippi, Jaimoe was a seasoned R&B road drummer — he had already played with Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Joe Tex — when Duane Allman called him to help build something new. What came next was a 45-year run that ended at the Beacon Theater on October 29, 2014, and left an indelible mark on American rock and roll.
With Dickey Betts’ passing in April 2024, Jaimoe is now the sole surviving original member of the band, and he is carrying that history forward with purpose. His guiding philosophy — “all American music is jazz” — shapes everything about this show. The Colony set will weave ABB classics through jazz standards, connecting the dots between the rock legacy and the deeper musical roots that always ran underneath it.
The ensemble for this night includes Bruce Katz on keyboards, Kris Jensen on saxophone, Joel Harrison on guitar and vocals, and Joe Fonda on bass and vocals. It is a jazz-forward lineup for a jazz-forward show, and that is exactly the point.
Jaimoe also received the Harriet Tubman Medal of Freedom in 2017 for his decades of civil rights activism — a reminder that the man behind the kit has always brought his whole self to the work.
