A late-August Friday in Burlington is a good reason to point the car north. Higher Ground in South Burlington is one of those 750-capacity rooms worth the drive on its own — and on August 21st, it is adding a very good reason to the list.
About Charles Wesley Godwin
Charles Wesley Godwin is a West Virginian singer-songwriter who plays with his band the Allegheny High. He has built his career on specificity — writing from the personal and the place-bound, not the marketable. His live reputation speaks for itself: he sold out his Red Rocks headline debut in October 2025, spent the fall opening Eric Church’s Free The Machine arena tour, and toured Europe and the UK while playing Outlaw Music Festival dates alongside Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.
The Burlington show is part of The Christian Name Tour, supporting his fourth studio LP Christian Name, out July 24, 2026 on Big Loud Records. It is the most personal thing he has made. The record grew from grief — specifically the stillbirth of his third child, Samuel, in 2024 — and from a return to faith. The album title draws from his late grandfather, a Methodist preacher named Charles Godwin. Godwin describes it as being “about mourning, but it’s also pointing to God as a healer and my salvation.”
Lead single “Better That Way” featuring Luke Combs is already out. He has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and CBS Saturday Sessions — the room will know his songs before he plays them.
