The tension is built into FreshGrass from the first note — traditional masters who hold the standard for bluegrass sharing a courtyard with musicians who have spent careers quietly pulling that standard apart, and somehow both feel at home. After pausing in 2026 for the first time since its launch in 2010, FreshGrass returns to MASS MoCA in North Adams on September 24–26, 2027, with organizers promising to make this edition “our best one yet.”
About the Show
FreshGrass is a three-day festival produced by the FreshGrass Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, in partnership with MASS MoCA and No Depression Magazine. Its premise, “great music, uprooted,” is not merely a tagline. The festival puts traditional bluegrass standard-bearers on the same stages as musicians working in the genre’s most progressive and experimental corners, and takes the friction seriously. New England Public Media has called it “a wonderland of traditional and cutting-edge roots music,” and that description has held through every edition since 2010.
The 2027 artist lineup has not yet been announced; organizers plan to share updates through the festival’s newsletter and social channels. What has been confirmed is the return of the annual FreshGrass Awards, which offer up to $20,000 in cash prizes and studio recording time at Compass Records in Nashville across four categories: band, banjo, guitar, and fiddle. The competition has a track record of finding talent early; past winners include Old Salt Union, Cricket Tell the Weather, and Twisted Pine. Past editions have also featured commissioned world premieres, FreshScores (silent films scored with live original music), workshops, and pop-up performances scattered across the campus. The event is family-friendly: children six and under are admitted free with an accompanying adult, FRESHKids programming runs throughout the weekend, and all festival passes include MASS MoCA gallery admission.
Venue & Logistics
MASS MoCA’s North Adams campus sits roughly 45 miles east of Albany, a manageable drive for much of the Capital Region. The festival spreads across the museum complex’s fields, courtyards, and gallery spaces, which means the music has a way of finding you between sets as much as during them: stumbling onto an impromptu session in a courtyard, wandering past a commissioned piece in one of the galleries. FreshGrass is rain-or-shine; tickets are non-refundable.
Tickets
Ticket pricing for 2027 has not been announced at the time of publication. For reference, adult weekend passes in 2025 started at $169, with student pricing at $129 and a VIP FreshPass at $500 — offered as historical context, not a projection of 2027 pricing. Buy tickets
