The Honorable Mentshn have a reputation for making klezmer feel simultaneous rather than nostalgic — something unfolding in 2026 and 1955 at once, in the same room. On Saturday, December 12, clarinetist Michael Winograd brings the ensemble to The Falcon in Marlboro for a Hanukkah Special, with special guest SoCalled joining on vocals.

WBGO has called Winograd “the leading klezmer clarinetist of his generation,” and Songlines put it in specifically musical terms: “Winograd’s lithe and nimble clarinet playing is superlative.” The Honorable Mentshn approach the tradition on what The Falcon’s calendar calls “foundationally neo-traditional” terms — high-energy, aesthetically mid-century, clarinet-fronted klezmer, the music of the Eastern European Jewish diaspora, with roots in cantorial melody, folk tunes, and Greek and Ottoman influences. The band’s name nods to the Yiddish word mentsh, a person of integrity. The Hanukkah night lineup includes Dan Blacksberg on trombone, Will Holshouser on accordion, Zoe Guigueno on bass, and David Licht on drums.
Winograd’s range as a musician extends well past the klezmer circuit. A New England Conservatory graduate, he spent 17 months in the cast and band of the Tony Award-winning “Cabaret” revival at the KitKat Club on Broadway, sold out Madison Square Garden alongside Vulfpeck, played Bonnaroo in 2023, and appeared on HBO’s “And Just Like That.” He co-founded Yiddish New York in 2015 and served as artistic director of KlezKanada from 2016 to 2021; in 2024, he received a United States Artists Fellowship. His most recent studio album, Early Bird Special, was released in 2022. In December 2025, he released Michael Winograd Plays Tanz! Live In New York City on Borscht Beat Records, a concert recording marking the 70th anniversary of Tanz! — the landmark 1955 klezmer/jazz fusion album by clarinetist Sam Musiker and Dave Tarras. Winograd transcribed the full album as a personal study exercise and first performed it in sequence at sold-out 2023 concerts before committing the results to record.

The Falcon is a 150-capacity jazz and blues club on Route 9W in Marlboro, in New York’s Hudson Valley. For a musician who has played arenas and international festivals, the close quarters change the nature of what’s possible. Dining is available 5:30–9 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m. No reservations are required.
