Three people. That’s it. Three people with too many instruments between them and an absolute refusal to stay in one genre — and somehow lespecial fills a room like a band twice their size. Albany gets the proof this Thursday, July 16, when the Connecticut prog-tronic power trio plays Lark Hall as the official Alive at Five afterparty. Doors open at 7 PM, show at 8.
About lespecial
Luke Bemand, Jonathan Grusauskas, and Rory Dolan have spent roughly two decades redefining what three people can do on a stage. Their sound — they call it “heavy future groove” — throws metal riffage, 808s, sub synths, thrash dynamics, and prog-funk into a single locked groove and somehow lands on something that hits the dance floor as hard as it hits your chest. Every member sings. Every member plays percussion. The wall of sound they build is both maximalist and precise.
Their latest record, Odd Times (2023), is their fourth full-length — and their darkest. Produced by David Sanchez of thrash band Havok, it’s a record that wrestles with isolation and the strangeness of time: heavy riffs, tribal drumming, and unexpected moments of levity that catch you off guard. Think Slayer-esque thrash on one track, Primus-style prog-funk on the next. It should not work as well as it does, and yet.
This show lands in the middle of lespecial’s active summer festival run — they play Moe.down just two days later on July 18. A band that deep into a circuit shows up road-sharp and fully locked in.
About the Venue
Lark Hall is a 300-capacity, 14,000 square-foot historic space at 351 Hudson Avenue in Albany. Built in 1916, it brings a spacious layout and modern sound and lighting to shows — exactly the kind of room that does justice to a band as sonically layered as lespecial.
