Here is the thing about a Slambovian Circus of Dreams show: nobody who has seen them once skips the next one. The Hudson Valley band plays what they call “rootsy, rockin’ psychedelia” — six musicians pulling from Dylan, Bowie, Syd Barrett, Tom Petty, and The Band. Chronogram Magazine voted them Best Band of 2022. Others have called them “Hillbilly Pink Floyd.” Both descriptions land.
On Friday, June 19, they play Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs.
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams
Founded in Sleepy Hollow in 1998, the Slambovians have spent nearly three decades bending Americana into something harder to categorize. Joziah Longo — lead voice and principal songwriter — played CBGB’s and Carnegie Hall in the same decade. Drummer Matthew Abourezk has opened for Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Bob Torsello has worked alongside Patti Smith. When you add accordion, cello, theremin, and saxophone to the mix, it makes sense that Garth Hudson of The Band became a fan. Their latest album, A Very Unusual Head, is considered their finest work yet. If the name is new to you, this is the show to fix that.
Putnam Place
Putnam Place is a Capital District club at 63A Putnam Street in downtown Saratoga Springs, with room for 500. It is a proper room for a band that needs space to stretch. June is a good time to catch a show in Saratoga — you beat the August racing crowds, the evenings are long, and downtown has enough going on to make a full night of it.
