There is a quiet clearing behind the Bearsville Theater where Albert Grossman is buried. The man who managed Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and Peter, Paul and Mary never saw his theater finished — he died of a heart attack aboard a Concorde flight to London in January 1986, while the building was still under construction. But the dream he planted in the Catskill woods endures. Walk through the doors of the Bearsville Theater today and you are stepping into a room that was designed, from its first blueprints, to be acoustically perfect. That it took nearly four decades and several owners to fully deliver on that promise only makes the payoff sweeter.
Nestled along Tinker Street in the hamlet of Bearsville — technically the Town of Woodstock, though locals will correct you if you call it Woodstock proper — the theater sits at the heart of the Bearsville Center, a compound that includes the historic Bear Cafe, the Bear Cantina, and the still-operating Utopia Sound Studios. The whole complex is Albert Grossman’s legacy, a creative campus he built through the 1960s and ’70s as a refuge for the artists he represented. Bob Dylan moved to the area to take advantage of the setup. George Harrison, Johnny Cash, Allen Ginsberg, and Janis Joplin all followed. The Bearsville Records label operated out of here. Todd Rundgren recorded A Wizard, a True Star at the studios. The place is soaked in history the way old wood soaks in creek water.
A New Chapter Under Peter Shapiro
For years, the theater cycled through periods of activity and dormancy. A barn conversion in 1989 gave it a performance-ready space, and shows came and went with varying consistency through the 2000s and 2010s. In 2019, Lizzie Vann purchased the complex and reopened it as the Bearsville Center, restoring the restaurants and grounds. Then, in April 2024, the theater entered its most promising chapter yet: Dayglo Presents, led by legendary concert promoter Peter Shapiro, took over operations under a long-term lease.
Shapiro is not a minor figure in live music. He owns Brooklyn Bowl (multiple locations), Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, and has produced landmark events including the Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well concerts at Soldier Field. When he says a venue matters, the industry listens. His arrival at Bearsville signaled serious intent — not a vanity project, but a commitment to making this 500-capacity room one of the premier small venues in the Northeast.
The Sound
The centerpiece of Shapiro’s renovation was the audio system. Working with event production company G4D Productions and Masque Sound, the theater installed a full Meyer Sound rig — UPQ-D1 loudspeakers with 80-by-50-degree coverage patterns, paired with 2100-LFC low-frequency elements tucked under the lip of the stage deck. The result is clean, uniform sound that reaches every corner of the 10,900-square-foot room without the dead spots or muddy bass that plague many venues this size.
Shapiro has not been shy about the results. He has stated publicly that the Bearsville Theater now has, in his view, the best sound of any comparable venue in America. That is a bold claim, but the room was literally engineered for it — Grossman’s original design prioritized acoustics above everything else. The Meyer system is the final piece of a puzzle that was started in the 1980s.

The Room and the Lineup
Standing capacity tops out at 500, with seated configurations accommodating around 260. The vibe is intimate — exposed wood, warm lighting, the feel of a place that was built by hand rather than designed by committee. Picture windows in the lounge look out over the Sawkill Creek and the Albert Grossman Memorial Park, where benches lead to Grossman’s grave marker nestled in the greenery. It is one of the few venues in America where you can pay respects to the founder before the opening act takes the stage.
Since Dayglo took over, the booking has reflected Shapiro’s deep Rolodex and taste for artists who reward attentive listening. The reopening show on June 1, 2024, featured Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble. Since then, the calendar has included Dawes, Drive-By Truckers, Guided By Voices, The Zombies, The Jayhawks, Guster, Dresden Dolls, and Andy Frasco. The programming skews toward roots rock, Americana, indie, and jam — acts that benefit from a room where the sound system disappears and the music fills the space naturally.
Before and After the Show
The Bearsville Center makes pre-show dining effortless. The Bear Cafe, right on the property at 295A Tinker Street, is a farm-to-table restaurant that has been a Woodstock institution for decades — reimagined and renovated in 2022, but still faithful to the spirit Grossman established. The Bear Cantina, also on-site, serves modern Mexican food with creekside dining that is hard to beat on a summer evening. For something in the village proper, Oriole 9 on Tinker Street is a reliable choice for eclectic American fare in a casual setting.

Getting There
Bearsville Theater is at 291 Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY 12498 — about two miles west of the Woodstock village green. From the New York State Thruway (I-87), take Exit 19 (Kingston) and follow Route 28 west to Route 375, which leads into Woodstock. Tinker Street is the main drag through town; keep heading west past the green and you will reach Bearsville Center on your left.
Parking is free and on-site, first-come, first-served. The lot handles most shows comfortably, but for sold-out nights, arrive early. There is no rideshare infrastructure to speak of in rural Ulster County, so plan on driving.
Know Before You Go
- The venue is general admission for most shows. If you want to be close, get there when doors open.
- Cell service is spotty in the Catskills. Download your tickets before you leave home.
- The Sawkill Creek path behind the theater is worth a walk before the show, especially in fall foliage season. Grossman’s grave is marked and easy to find.
- Woodstock itself is a 5-minute drive east and full of shops, galleries, and cafes if you want to make a day of it.
