Amy Grant’s first collection of original songs in 13 years did not arrive on a promotional schedule. She wrote them in the summer of 2023 while recovering from open-heart surgery and a bicycle accident, working through the experience the way she always has. The Me That Remains — released May 8 via Thirty Tigers — is the result, and Spectrum Culture called it “arguably one of the most emotionally mature and spiritually resonant albums of her career.” She performs it at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater on Friday, July 31.
About the Show
The show is billed as “An Evening with Amy Grant.” No support act is listed. The Me That Remains is Grant’s first studio record of completely original material since How Mercy Looks from Here in 2013, produced by Mac McAnally — a ten-time CMA Award winner and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer — and featuring guest appearances from Vince Gill, Michael W. Smith, Ruby Amanfu, Sarah Cannon, and Corrina Gill. The album draws directly from the last several years of Grant’s life: she underwent open-heart surgery in 2020 after discovering a birth defect she had carried since childhood, sustained injuries in a bicycle accident in July 2022, and began writing in the summer of 2023 as therapy.
Grant said of making the record: “I feel like this project freed me from expectations that I didn’t even know I had.” For a six-time GRAMMY Award winner, 2022 Kennedy Center Honoree, and the first Contemporary Christian Music artist to achieve platinum status, reach No. 1 on the pop charts, and perform at the GRAMMY Awards, that sense of liberation reads as genuine. This is a 65-year-old artist with nothing left to prove and, apparently, a lot left to say.
Venue & Logistics
The Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater is an outdoor venue on the grounds of a cultural campus in western New York that has hosted summer programming for decades. Getting there takes some planning — that is part of the draw. This is a destination show in a destination place, and arriving early enough to explore the grounds before the 8:00 p.m. start makes the trip worth the early departure. If you want to make a full day of it, Grant also leads a Masters Series Masterclass at 12:30 p.m. in Norton Hall on July 31 (separate ticket required).
