He Is Legend has been at this long enough that a genuine catalog set almost qualifies as a format experiment. Seven studio albums and more than one full-album anniversary run already behind them: the Time Travel Tour, which arrives at Empire Underground in Albany on Wednesday, October 21, does something different. Rather than spotlight a single record, it pulls from every album and EP they’ve made, from 2004’s I Am Hollywood through 2022’s Endless Hallway, a span that crosses metalcore, Southern rock, sludge, and psych-infused hard rock without claiming any of them as its permanent address.
About the Show
The occasion is the 20th anniversary of Suck Out the Poison, the 2006 album that pushed He Is Legend toward a harder, more aggressive sound. Rather than reprise that record front to back, the band chose to widen the aperture on a two-month headlining run that began September 18 in Johnson City, Tennessee, and closes October 25 in Baltimore. The setlist pulls from all seven studio albums, spanning metalcore, Southern rock, sludge, and psych-infused hard rock across more than two decades. The band’s own framing: they wanted “a more varied set list” after several runs organized around a single record.
He Is Legend formed in Wilmington, North Carolina in 2003, a group of high school friends who signed first to Tribunal Records and then to Solid State Records for their debut full-length. Critically noted releases including Heavy Fruit (2014) and White Bat (2019) built a reputation in heavier American rock; Endless Hallway (2022) pushed further into stoner sludge than anything they’d done before. Frontman Schuylar Croom, on why the band shows up: “We’re a rock band at the heart of it all. We live for the hour on stage every night.” In Angles and Excide support.
