Jeffrey Gaines at The Falcon | November 12, 2026

By Nate Calloway · September 5, 2026

Jeffrey Gaines builds every set the same way: he knows the first song, and then the room tells him the rest. Three decades into a career spanning eight albums, that spontaneity is not a quirk — it is a philosophy, and it demands exactly the kind of small room where you can see his hands on the guitar.

About the Show

Gaines plays The Falcon in Marlboro on Thursday, November 12, with music beginning at 7:30 p.m. He grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, raised by parents who played Otis Redding and Johnny Taylor; that lineage ran deep. By 1989 he had relocated to Philadelphia, and in 1992 released his self-titled debut on Chrysalis Records, a record that produced the hit “Hero in Me” and introduced a singer-songwriter who could carry real soul feeling without losing the folk specificity that makes the difference between a feeling and a performance. His catalog has grown to eight studio albums and two live records. The most recent, Alright, came out in 2018 on Omnivore Recordings, his first new material in fifteen years, recorded in Los Angeles with producer Chris Price and a band that included drummer Pete Thomas and bassist Davey Faragher from Elvis Costello’s Imposters, and guitarist Val McCallum. Gaines has long counted Costello as an influence, and the lyrical wordplay throughout Alright reflects it.

That soul-and-folk balance is what critics have returned to across his career. Interview magazine called his work “soul-searching” and “refreshingly free of jargon, sentiment or cliché”; others have noted his “soulful, wounded vocals.” The live version of all of it is confirmed by a story that has followed Gaines for years: Peter Gabriel, attending one of his shows, heard what Gaines does with “In Your Eyes” and offered six words: “I wish I’d sung it with so much soul.” No support act is listed for November 12.

Venue & Logistics

The Falcon, at 1348 Route 9W in Marlboro, is a 150-seat room on the Hudson Valley listening-room circuit. For a songwriter who has shared stages with Tom Petty and Sheryl Crow, that scale is not a step back; it is a different kind of show entirely, one where the energy Gaines says he reads from the room is actually there to be read. Dining service runs from 5:30 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.
