RoseAnn Fino describes her music as “Americana with a punk edge” — a fair read, given a career that runs from a Woodstock Records debut to years running benefit shows across New York City and back home to the Hudson Valley where she started. On Friday, October 23, she brings the release of “Up in Smoke” to The Falcon in Marlboro. The EP was recorded right there in Marlboro, at Welterweight Studios, under producer Ryan Dieringer.
About the Show
“Up in Smoke” reflects the arc of that career: Fino grew up in the Hudson Valley with Dylan and Springsteen on the record player and a guitar in her hands at age five, left for New York City at seventeen, and spent years working its stages and benefit circuits before returning home to make this record. The EP weaves original compositions alongside reinterpretations of Yiddish folk songs, exploring themes of homecoming and cultural identity.
Elmore Magazine wrote that her songs “grapple with the millennial perils of post-bust America,” and that pull between roots and restlessness has been there since her 2013 debut on Woodstock Records, produced by Aaron L. Hurwitz (Professor Louie, The Band) and featuring guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison). Subsequent EPs and years of fundraising shows followed, including 27 events in her “Not My President” series and, more recently, “Love is the Message,” a bi-monthly concert series she curates in New Paltz to benefit local food pantries. She currently performs across the tri-state area.
Joining her is Dante DeFelice, an alt-folk singer-songwriter from Marlboro (the same small Hudson River Valley town where The Falcon sits) who also performs under the name Goodnight Brother. His compositions explore personal narratives with a directness that suits a room this size. The two have worked together before, including on the “Love is the Message” series. Supporting musicians Caroline Ryan, Dean Mahoney, and Drew Murtaugh round out the evening. Proceeds from Fino’s single “Daloy Politsey” support the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement.
Venue & Logistics
The Falcon’s Underground Stage at 1348 Route 9W in Marlboro holds 150, and the room is a good match for two Hudson Valley singer-songwriters playing a release show for an EP recorded a few miles down the road.
