Doors open at 7 PM on a Thursday night, which means you can actually make this one without blowing your whole week. That is the deal at Funk ‘n Waffles on October 22, when Nik Parr & The Selfless Lovers roll into Syracuse on one of the more interesting Thursday-night stops on their national circuit.
About Nik Parr & The Selfless Lovers
Here is what you need to know: they are a piano-driven roots rock band out of Austin, Texas — but Nik Parr himself grew up in Corpus Christi, and you can hear the Gulf Coast in the grooves. Think Bruce Springsteen’s raw intensity crossed with Jerry Lee Lewis’s showmanship, filtered through New Orleans late-night energy and Texas soul. It is the kind of music that makes a room move.
And they make rooms move. The band plays more than 150 shows a year nationally — confirmed stops from Seattle to Atlanta, Charlotte to Kansas City — and they have shared stages with Rebirth Brass Band, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and The Soul Rebels. They know how to fill a room and they know how to hold it.
The signature moment is Nik Parr playing saxophone and piano simultaneously. It is not a gimmick. At KGSR’s Blues on the Green earlier this year, he was performing saxophone while lying on the floor. The crowd lost it. Expect something similar on a Thursday night at Funk ‘n Waffles.
Their 2022 full-length When The Bars Close is the anchor of the catalog. A new EP, American Lover Boy — produced by Low Cut Connie — was slated for this spring. Worth a listen before you go.
