When Sierra Ferrell swept the 67th Grammy Awards — walking away with four trophies, including Best Americana Album for Trail of Flowers — the music press scrambled to explain how a woman who had spent years freight-hopping and busking between Seattle and New Orleans had become the most decorated artist in American roots music. The Heavy Petal Tour, now stretching across 40-plus dates in North America and Europe, is the answer playing out in real time. On Wednesday, September 2, Artpark gets its turn.

About Sierra Ferrell

Ferrell grew up in Charleston, West Virginia, and spent her early twenties as a genuine nomad — hitchhiking, living out of a van, playing for strangers in whatever city she landed in. That period shaped everything: the genre-agnostic instincts, the easy command of gypsy jazz and old-time bluegrass and Americana in the same set, the sense that she’s never performing so much as just playing. She eventually settled in Nashville, signed to Rounder Records, and released Long Time Coming in 2021 — a record that arrived with Sarah Jarosz and Billy Strings alongside her and made clear she had no interest in fitting neatly into any category. Trail of Flowers, released in March 2024, confirmed it. The New York Times Magazine wrote that she “puts together her own distinctive cutting-edge synthesis of antique styles.” Four Grammys later, that reads as understatement.

The Heavy Petal Tour has already moved through Roskilde, Rock Werchter, and Down The Rabbit Hole before swinging back to North America. She’ll open for The Red Clay Strays at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville come October. Artpark, at this point in the tour’s arc, is a strong booking — a Western New York stop on what is shaping up to be the Americana tour of the year.
