The Bad Plus at The Egg | June 23, 2026

Twenty-six years is a long run for any band. For The Bad Plus, it has been long enough to reshape what jazz sounds like in the 21st century — and to know, with characteristic clarity, when to stop. Founding members Reid Anderson and Dave King confirmed earlier this year that 2026 will be the final chapter: “we have decided to bring this chapter to a close. 2026 will be the final year.” Their appearance at The Egg on Tuesday, June 23rd is one of the last chances Capital Region audiences will have to witness them in the room.

About The Bad Plus

Formed in 2000 by Anderson (bass) and King (drums), The Bad Plus built a reputation that defied easy categorization — avant-garde jazz with rock energy, pop deconstruction with improvisational fearlessness. The current quartet also includes Ben Monder on guitar and Chris Speed on tenor saxophone. Their most recent album, Complex Emotions, extends that fearlessness, and an 18th album via Mack Avenue Records is forthcoming — meaning this farewell tour is not so much a closing of the books as a final, deliberate page-turn.

Earlier this spring, Anderson and King took a detour worth noting: they joined Craig Taborn and Chris Potter for a Keith Jarrett American Quartet tribute tour — a reminder that even in their final year, the founding members remain as invested in the larger jazz conversation as they have ever been.

The Egg date falls inside a four-stop New York farewell run: Sony Hall in New York City on June 19th, The Egg on June 23rd, the Rochester International Jazz Festival on June 24th, and The Mill in Westport on June 27th — which will be the final tour date of The Bad Plus’s career, full stop.

About The Egg

The Egg sits at the center of Empire State Plaza, an Albany venue with a mandate for serious programming and an audience that shows up prepared to listen. The Swyer Theatre configuration suits a band like this — close enough to feel the room breathing, formal enough to demand attention. Opening the evening is Stuart Bogie, a New York City-based multi-instrumentalist and composer whose credits include Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, and Antibalas, as well as original scores for documentary films. A reasonable way to enter the night.
