There is a kind of songwriter who does not write to genres so much as carve channels between them, and Walter Salas-Humara has been doing exactly that since 1985. The Silos, the New York City band he has led for forty years, earned “Best New Artist” recognition from Rolling Stone’s critics in 1987 for their album Cuba — but the categories that described them then, and the ones they helped give shape to (alt-country, Americana, indie rock), have never held them in place for long. Their thirteenth studio album, Everything, arrived this past April, produced by Pete Donnelly and built around ten original songs, each accompanied by its own music video. The Bandcamp notes describe it as a band entering “a new creative era marked by fresh, powerful, and emotionally honest material.” This Black Friday, the 40th Anniversary Tour comes to Troy.
About the Show
The Hangar on the Hudson has made the Friday after Thanksgiving one of the Capital Region’s more anticipated holiday shows, and this year the Silos are the headliner. Alongside new material from Everything, Salas-Humara is releasing a series of live albums to commemorate the anniversary, beginning with recordings from the band’s first national tour — a 1987–88 run of 75 shows in 90 days that he described as “booked very much like punk rock tours at the time.” He is also a working visual artist, with paintings and prints available on his own site alongside the tour dates, and his stated commitment is to “write and record new songs and make new paintings” for as long as he lives. The Troy date is billed on the Silos’ own tour page as a “Black Friday Happy Hour Extravaganza,” shared with what the band calls “2 of Albany’s finest bands.”
The Regal Selects are a local garage/indie rock outfit whose stated philosophy is “Rock ‘n’ roll for the sheer fun of it.” Fronted by Howe Glassman (previously of Dugans, Grainbelt, and Coal Palace Kings), their debut album Declassified on Kranepool Records opens with a Hüsker Dü-ish track called “As Above, So Below.” Saucer is a Rensselaer County trio comprising Jim Crawley, Jim Temple, and Evan Crawley, whose debut Outside showcased “loud, fun, driving, guitar-oriented rock” and whose sophomore album Not Until Four arrived in November 2023.
