The Garrett Boys’ debut album, It Runs Deep, earns its title in the most literal way — the music draws from roughly 200 years of family history on 500 hilly, wooded acres in Overton County, Tennessee, land their family has called home since ancestors came from North Carolina and settled. That history isn’t lyrical backdrop; it’s the structural premise of what this trio plays. On Thursday, November 12, they bring the record to the Capital Region — The Hangar on the Hudson in Troy — with special guest Stringy and the Beans opening.
About the Show
The Garrett Boys are brothers Stephen and Russell Garrett, joined by Stephen’s son Carter, who will be the ninth generation of Garretts to live on that Tennessee land. Stephen plays acoustic guitar and sings lead. Their sound draws from Appalachian folk, bluegrass, and country, shaped by artists including Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Chris Knight, and Hank Williams Jr.
It Runs Deep, their debut on Pond Ridge Records, was produced by Ray Kennedy — whose credits include Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams — and the result earns that pedigree. The album moves through family heritage, faith, and economic hardship: factory exhaustion, the threat of losing ancestral land, the pull between leaving home and staying put. None of it tips into sentiment. Americana Highways called it “a remarkable debut — confident, grounded, and fully realized” and described the communal storytelling as recalling the spirit of The Band. The same review documented the band at the 2025 Annapolis Songwriters Festival, where they held the music seriously without holding themselves the same way.
Stephen has described the project plainly: “Our music is about the importance and depth of family and community. It’s a mix of what we have been versus what we can become, and how we can take the good from all that and build a future.” Singles from the record include “Drag in the River,” “Me and This Land,” “It Runs Deep,” and “Back Home.” Recent road dates include Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland and the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. Stringy and the Beans opens as special guest.
