The Tragically Hip never fully crossed into American rock consciousness, but upstate New York has always been an exception to that rule. The band’s catalog — built around the specific textures of small-town Ontario, hockey nights, and an elegiac sense of Canadian geography — landed here in a way it rarely did elsewhere in the country, and the Lake Ontario corridor has been Hip country ever since. The Strictly Hip have been tending that devotion since 1995, and after more than 3,000 performances across the United States and Canada, the Buffalo-based tribute act has long since graduated from novelty act to regional institution.
About the Show
Originally conceived in St. Catharines, Ontario before relocating to Buffalo in 1999, The Strictly Hip describe their approach in terms more musicological than theatrical: “an almost academic” recreation of the catalog, performed with “reverence, respect, and accuracy.” They are explicit that this is not a campy impersonator act, but music “performed passionately, respectfully and with reverence.” That framing has held for three decades, including an eight-year Sunday night residency at Crocodile Bar in Buffalo that built a devoted regional following one set at a time. Since Gord Downie’s passing in 2017, tribute performances like this one carry additional weight: they are the only live version of this catalog that still exists.
The credentials bear out the longevity. Nine Buffalo Music Awards for Top Tribute Band, with vocalist Jeremy Hoyle earning four individual BMAs as Top Male Rock Vocalist and guitarist Bruce Wojick taking five as Top Original Rock Guitarist. Induction into the Buffalo Music Awards Hall of Achievement in 2010. A national touring expansion that has carried the band through twelve major U.S. markets since 2003. Their 2026 schedule includes Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo and Higher Ground in Burlington, which puts Photo City Music Hall’s 400-person room in perspective. The Eventbrite listing describes what devotees come for: “singalongs, nostalgia, road-trip memories, and the kind of communal energy that turns a concert into a celebration.” No support act is listed for the Rochester date.
Venue & Logistics
Photo City Music Hall is a club on Atlantic Avenue in western New York, close enough to Buffalo that regional regulars will make the trip and compact enough that the catalog registers differently than it does in a larger room. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. The show is open to ages 16 and up.
