The album folds gospel, psychedelia, and experimental rock into Childers’ Appalachian storytelling, a deliberate reach beyond the neotraditional country of his acclaimed 2017 debut Purgatory (produced by Sturgill Simpson) and 2023’s Rustin’ In The Rain. The press received it accordingly: Rolling Stone gave it 4.5 stars, Pitchfork scored it a 7.8, and GQ called it “the most visionary country album of the year.”
The Grammy committee took note as well.
