Here is what you need to know going in: The Smiths called it a day in 1987, and most of us never got to be in the room for any of it. Caligula Blushed exists to fix that. They are coming to Montage Music Hall in Rochester on Saturday, June 6, and if you care about this catalog at all, this show belongs on your calendar.
About Caligula Blushed
Caligula Blushed is billed as the most authentic and only Smiths and Morrissey tribute band currently touring the U.S. That is not a marketing line — it is just the reality of what is out there. Frontman Quinn saw The Smiths perform live twice during the 1985 Meat Is Murder tour. He built this band around what it actually felt like to stand in that room.
The show is a full production: costume changes, projection visuals, stage antics — not a greatest-hits set delivered by guys in matching black shirts, but a genuine attempt to put you in the experience. Expect “This Charming Man,” “How Soon Is Now?,” “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” “Suedehead,” “First of the Gang to Die,” and “Ask,” along with deep cuts for the fans who have every b-side memorized. One reviewer noted that the crowd sang along to every song. That tracks for this particular audience.
Montage Music Hall
Montage Music Hall is a 400-capacity room in downtown Rochester at 55 Chestnut Street — big enough to feel like a real show, small enough that you are never stuck in the back wondering what is happening on stage. The room has an elevated stage with good sightlines from the floor. Rochester Entertainment runs the calendar here and books it seriously; the venue hosts the Rochester International Jazz Festival and Rochester Fringe Festival, among others. It is a room that is used to putting on a proper event.
