If you follow the heavier end of post-hardcore, Thousand Below at The Song & Dance is the kind of Wednesday night show worth rearranging your week for. The San Diego quintet is in the middle of their biggest headlining run to date, they have a strong new record behind them, and they are playing a 200-capacity room on Jefferson Street in downtown Syracuse. That combination does not come around often.
About Thousand Below
Formed in early 2016 around vocalist James DeBerg and guitarist Josh Thomas — and completed by Devin Chance (guitar), Josh Billimoria (bass), and Garrett Halvax (drums) — Thousand Below has spent close to a decade building toward a record like Buried In Jade. Their fourth studio album, out via Pale Chord Music/Rise Records, moves across metalcore, atmospheric rock, and post-hardcore without losing focus. Produced by Austin Coupe — whose credits include The Devil Wears Prada and Citizen — with select tracks handled by Josh Gilbert and mixing by Joseph McQueen, it is the kind of album that pays off loudest in a live room.
The Syracuse date is part of a 24-stop North American tour — Thousand Below’s largest headlining run to date. Supporting acts for this specific night are Acres (post-hardcore), VCTMS (metalcore), and Lost In Separation (metalcore). That is a full four-band bill worth getting there by doors for.
The Venue
The Song & Dance is a bar and music venue at 115 E Jefferson St in downtown Syracuse, with a capacity of 200. It is part of the After Dark Presents circuit and sits in a walkable stretch of Jefferson Street. At that size, a post-hardcore show is not something you watch from across the room — you are in it.
