Nearly three decades after forming in Chicago and more than 3,400 shows into what AllMusic has called “the preeminent Grateful Dead tribute band in the U.S.,” Dark Star Orchestra has reached the point where most of the usual caveats about tribute acts simply don’t apply anymore. This is an ensemble that has spent the better part of 30 years mastering the art of live Dead reconstruction — and persuaded six of the original Grateful Dead members to join them on stage along the way.
About the Show
The Penn’s Peak date falls within DSO’s Fall 2026 Tour, a northeastern and mid-Atlantic circuit building through November before concluding with a four-night Florida residency in early December. Four days before Jim Thorpe, the tour’s marquee event takes place at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. on November 21: a Rex Foundation benefit marking the 45th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s 1981 live album Reckoning, during which DSO will recreate a full three-set show from that era, one acoustic set followed by two electric, with the specific concert held back until showtime per band tradition. Reckoning drew from the Dead’s intimate 1980 acoustic/electric performances and highlighted the band’s deep roots in folk, blues, country, and bluegrass.
The Penn’s Peak show lands between Binghamton on November 24 and two nights in Huntington, New York on November 27 and 28. The current seven-piece lineup: Rob Barraco (keyboards, vocals), Jeff Mattson (lead guitar, vocals), Rob Eaton (guitar), Lisa Mackey (vocals), Dino English (drums), Rob Koritz (drums), and Skip Vangelas (bass). No supporting acts have been announced for the Jim Thorpe date.
Summer 2026 saw DSO at New York’s Rooftop at Pier 17 and a weekend at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley billed as “The Music Never Stops: A Rex Foundation Benefit & Tribute to Bob Weir” — a calendar that reflects where this band stands now, deep into their third decade of operation.
Venue & Logistics
Penn’s Peak, in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, is one of the stronger rooms along the Hudson Valley circuit, at 1,800 capacity and well suited to acts that rely on full-crowd participation. Keyboardist Rob Barraco has described the band’s mission as recreating “some of the magic that was created for us over the years.” Show time is 8:00 p.m.
