Jelly Roll’s arrival at SPAC this June represents something that doesn’t happen as often as bookers pretend — an artist who genuinely earned his way to a 25,000-seat outdoor amphitheater. The Nashville native (born Jason DeFord) spent the better part of a decade releasing music to an underground following before “Son of a Sinner” broke him onto the mainstream charts in 2022. What followed was one of the more unusual ascents in recent memory: a rapper-turned-country artist who won over the genre establishment without abandoning the rawness that made him interesting in the first place.

His 2023 album Whitsitt Chapel reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 — a genuine crossover achievement for an artist whose catalog lives at the intersection of rap, rock, and country. Beautifully Broken followed, earning him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Country Album and producing his first No. 1 single. This spring, his collaboration with Shaboozey, “Amen,” logged multiple weeks at the top of the charts. The trajectory has been steep and sustained, which is not nothing.
The tour is called The Little Ass Shed Tour — a name that nods, presumably, to the origins of his recording setup — and the contrast with a full SPAC production is not lost on anyone who has been following this arc.
The Venue
SPAC holds 25,000 across its sheltered seats and its sprawling lawn, and the lawn in June is a reliable part of the Saratoga experience — one of the few outdoor venues in the Northeast where the setting does some of the work for you.
