Lynne Hanson at Abilene Bar & Lounge | October 8, 2026

By Meg Andersen · August 26, 2026

Lynne Hanson’s press bio contains one of the more honest self-descriptions in Americana: “too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country.” The Ottawa-based songwriter makes good on both counts — her catalog moves between introspective, lyrical writing and gritty swamp rock, and she builds the whole thing around the kind of live connection that makes each shift land. She performs at Abilene Bar & Lounge in Rochester on Thursday, October 8.

About the Show

Hanson has earned the moniker “Canada’s Queen of Americana” over an eighteen-year solo career spanning ten studio albums and two poetry collections. Critics draw comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch; Americana UK described her as “a fine singer whose voice is strong, soaked in experience, well capable of rocking out with the best.” Her live sets move between delicate ballads and gritty Americana swamp, and her between-song banter often leaves audiences laughing. She performs solo on this date.

Her 2024 album Just A Poet, released on Panda Cave Records and produced by Jim Bryson, earned a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Contemporary Album of the Year. Hanson described the record as a return to familiar ground: “I was ready to go back to more familiar territory and let someone else I trusted drive the production bus.” Her most recent single, “Invisible,” released in April 2026, explores what she describes as “the feeling of being overlooked.” She has announced plans to record her eleventh studio album at Henhouse Studios in Nashville.

A two-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner and recipient of the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award, Hanson has opened for Grammy-nominated artists including Gretchen Peters, Steve Forbert, and Albert Lee. She has played major festivals across North America, Europe, and the UK, including Take Root in the Netherlands, Glasgow Americana in Scotland, Kerrville Folk Festival, and Winnipeg Folk Festival in Canada. The Rochester date is part of a fall 2026 U.S. run; UK and Ireland tour dates follow in spring 2027.

Venue & Logistics

Abilene Bar & Lounge at 153 Liberty Pole Way is a 200-capacity bar and music venue in downtown Rochester, in the Finger Lakes region. For a solo show from an artist whose reputation rests on audience connection and disarming authenticity, a room this size is going to serve her well. Music begins at 7:30 p.m.
