You don’t stumble across a voice like Maria Muldaur’s in a 150-seat room — not after sixty years of it, forty-four solo albums, and a Grammy nomination this year. But The Falcon in Marlboro does that kind of thing, and on Saturday afternoon she’ll be there with pianist Bruce Katz, working through naughty bawdy blues and swingin’ syncopatin’ jazz from the twenties and thirties.
About the Show
Muldaur began her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band during the folk revival era, later toured and recorded with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, and reached international attention in 1973 with “Midnight at the Oasis.” In the decades since, she has released 44 solo albums spanning blues, gospel, R&B, jazz, big band, and children’s music, earning seven Grammy nominations along the way. The Americana Music Association honored her with its Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award in 2019. Her most recent album, “One Hour Mama” (2026), earned a Grammy nomination and two Blues Foundation nominations, adding one more chapter to a career that keeps writing new ones.
The Falcon show is part of a fall 2026 acoustic tour that takes Muldaur and Katz through nine dates across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, and Maine. The afternoon’s program is billed as “a fun repertoire of Naughty Bawdy Blues & Swingin’ Syncopatin’ Jazz tunes from the ’20s & ’30s,” the pre-rock American music that still carries a charge when someone who genuinely understands it walks into a room this size.
Katz holds his own at the piano bench. He has spent three decades in blues and roots music, releasing 10 albums as a bandleader and appearing on more than 70 recordings by other artists. Gregg Allman put it plainly: “He can play jazz, blues, Bach, anything. Man, he’s a heavy!” The late Pinetop Perkins offered his own endorsement: “Now that’s a piano player.” In 2019, Katz won a Blues Music Award for Best Acoustic Album for “Journeys To The Heart Of The Blues,” a stripped-down acoustic session with Joe Louis Walker and Giles Robson.
