Les Claypool has spent forty years resisting the obvious play. The Claypool Gold tour, which brings Primus to Albany Med Health System at SPAC on Friday, June 12, is the latest evidence: rather than a standard headlining set, Claypool is presenting three of his projects — Primus, the Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade — on a single bill, sharing the stage in a fluid format with setlists designed to differ from night to night. It’s either a fascinating structural gambit or an overcrowded evening with an identity problem. Given the catalog Claypool is working with, the former seems more likely.
About Primus
Primus formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-1980s, with Claypool — the only member to have appeared on every studio recording — building a sound he once described as “psychedelic polka.” The genre labels have never held: funk metal, alternative metal, thrash funk, avant-garde. What’s held is the catalog. The gold-certified Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) introduced them to a wider audience; Tales from the Punchbowl (1995) and its Grammy-nominated “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” broadened it further; the South Park theme (1997) cemented the reach. Metallica famously considered Claypool as Cliff Burton’s replacement in 1986, then passed — James Hetfield’s reported rationale being that he was too funky. A detail that explains everything about what Primus became. Their most recent original album, The Desaturating Seven (2017), drew on progressive-rock influences and marked a return to new material after a lengthy gap.
The Claypool Lennon Delirium — Claypool’s psychedelic collaboration with Sean Lennon — and the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade join Primus for the Claypool Gold format, with all three projects sharing the stage each night. In late 2024, Primus also conducted the “Interstellar Drum Derby,” reviewing more than 6,100 applications after an unexpected drummer departure. Who sits behind the kit on June 12 is part of what makes the night worth seeing.

Albany Med Health System at SPAC requires no introduction to anyone who has spent a summer in the Albany / Capital District. The 25,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater in Saratoga Springs — 5,200 sheltered seats and approximately 20,000 lawn spaces along the Avenue of the Pines — has long served as the region’s primary destination for major touring acts. A June night on the lawn here remains one of the better arguments for the format. SPAC members receive priority access and reduced fees; the venue enforces a clear-bag policy and provides lawn chairs through rental only.
