The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Canandaigua for Red, White & Boom on Thursday, July 2 — a concert tradition at CMAC dating to 1983 that, in 2026, carries a specific historical charge: America’s 250th birthday. The semiquincentennial is as good a reason as any for an orchestra to lean fully into the repertoire the occasion demands.
About the Show
The program draws from John Philip Sousa’s march repertoire alongside patriotic anthems and, in the RPO’s own words, “favorite toe-tappers” — the kind of programming that works precisely because the setting allows it. Founded in 1922 and presenting approximately 150 concerts annually to as many as 170,000 community members, the RPO is not a pickup ensemble playing patriotic filler; it is a full professional orchestra bringing genuine craft to a community concert. Music Director Andreas Delfs and Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik, now in his 32nd season with the orchestra, anchor the program. The evening concludes with a fireworks display, weather permitting.
