Sammy Rae & The Friends called their debut album Something For Everybody, and the live show is where the promise gets paid. The band draws from classic rock, folk, funk, soul, and jazz with the ease of a group that stopped worrying about genre years ago, and their “the GET DOWN!” tour brings that sound to Basilica Hudson on Thursday, February 18.
About the Show
Led by singer-songwriter Sammy Rae, who grew up in Derby, Connecticut and relocated to New York City in her early 20s, the group calls itself “a collective of dreamers and artists” that functions as a family first. That orientation toward community extends to the audience: the band’s guiding mantra, “go put a smile on somebody’s face, go tell somebody they’ve got a place in this world,” is less a tagline than the explicit intention behind a live show defined by “palpable chemistry, deft virtuosity, and vocal fireworks.” The band has performed sold-out dates across North America, the UK, and Europe, with festival appearances at Bonnaroo’s main stage, Sound on Sound, and All Things Go, drawing what one outlet described as a “refreshingly diverse” following.
Something For Everybody arrived September 20, 2024, on Nettwerk Records. The band’s debut full-length, produced by Fernando Lodiero, expanded the palette with string quartet arrangements, guest vocals, and gang choruses, building on the foundation of the earlier EPs The Good Life (2018) and Let’s Throw a Party (2021); the release party in New York City drew more than 1,100 people seeking tickets. A covers album, Songs We Wish We Wrote, followed in July 2025. Sammy Rae described the approach when the debut came out: “After 7 years of playing, touring, and recording, we’ve come to realize that that simply isn’t going away. We won’t wake up one day and decide we are a jazz band, or a rock band, or a folk band.” The February 18 Basilica Hudson date is stop No. 35 on a 61-concert run across five countries.
