His Friday night appearance at del Lago Resort & Casino’s Vine Showroom in Waterloo brings a touring act with six No. 1 singles and a Grand Ole Opry membership to a 1,400-capacity room in the Finger Lakes — which is a better setting for what McCreery does than a shed show would be.

The North Carolina native’s career is something of a study in outlasting the machinery that made him. His 2011 debut made him the first country artist and the youngest male artist of any genre to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — a genuinely historic record, whatever one thinks of the competitive-singing pipeline. Casino showrooms can go either way as live spaces; The Vine has assembled a consistent programming record across country and comedy. At 1,400 capacity, the sightlines are considerably closer than anything on the amphitheater circuit, and for an artist whose craft runs toward lyric and voice, that proximity matters.
