Sixty years is a long time to keep a song alive, and Felix Cavaliere has managed it with several — “Groovin’,” “Good Lovin’,” “People Got to Be Free” — each a benchmark of 1960s blue-eyed soul that has outlasted the decade that produced it. The 60th Anniversary Tour lands at del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo on Friday, March 5.
About the Show
The Rascals formed in Garfield, New Jersey in 1965, originally as The Young Rascals — a name they shed in 1967–1968 as the music matured beyond the cutesy billing. The original lineup: Cavaliere on lead vocals and keyboards, Eddie Brigati on vocals and percussion, Dino Danelli on drums, and Gene Cornish on guitar. By the peak years, they were widely regarded as the preeminent practitioners of blue-eyed soul in American rock, running alongside the Righteous Brothers as a band that could actually sing R&B without flinching: 17 Top 20 hits, seven Top 10 singles, and three number-ones across a catalog that held its own against everything Motown and the British Invasion were throwing at the same chart. The 1997 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction was the formal accounting; the Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Songwriter Hall of Fame memberships filled in the footnotes. The band disbanded in 1972 and returned to active touring in 2002. More than two decades of renewed touring have settled the live set into something with genuine depth — “People Got to Be Free” consistently tops the most-performed list in recent shows, followed by “Good Lovin’,” “A Beautiful Morning,” “Groovin’,” and “How Can I Be Sure.” The 60th Anniversary Tour leans into that history, honoring, as the show’s own billing puts it, “the fans who have made these songs so enduring.” One note for returning concertgoers: guitarist Gene Cornish has retired and won’t be performing, though he may appear to greet the audience. Cavaliere leads the current lineup. No opening act is listed for this date.
