The most-performed song in 54-40’s catalog spent years being more famous under someone else’s name. “I Go Blind” — a staple of the Vancouver band’s sets since their earliest shows — reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 when Hootie & the Blowfish covered it and it appeared on an episode of Friends in 1995, introducing the track to an American audience that largely had no idea where it came from. On Friday, November 27, the Canadians who wrote it play Town Ballroom in Buffalo, the penultimate stop on their 2026 North American run.
About the Show
54-40 formed on New Year’s Eve 1980 at the Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret on Hastings Street in Vancouver, a debut that drew roughly 100 people and earned the band $100. The band’s name comes from the 1840s American political slogan “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight,” a territorial dispute over what is now British Columbia, adopted, per their own framing, as a statement of aggressive idealism, political but ironic. Four decades and 17 albums later, the core lineup remains largely intact: Neil Osborne on vocals and guitar, Brad Merritt on bass, Matt Johnson on drums, and Dave Genn on guitar. The catalog they carry to Buffalo includes four platinum-certified albums in Canada, one gold album, and a set of singles that have become fixtures in their live set: “Baby Ran,” “Ocean Pearl,” “She La,” “One Day in Your Life,” and “Over My Head,” which reached #1 on the RPM chart. “I Go Blind” has been performed close to 200 times in documented setlist history and was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021. The band holds dual Hall of Fame status: BC Entertainment Hall of Fame (2011) and Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame (2017). Their most recent studio album is Embassy Supreme (2020); the Green Album received a remastered reissue in 2023. The Buffalo show follows an October run through Ontario and a prior Buffalo stop this August at Terminal B at the Outer Harbor.
