I Am the Avalanche at Rec Room | December 1, 2026

By Marc Delacroix · September 20, 2026

Vinnie Caruana has been fronting New York rock bands for the better part of three decades — first with The Movielife, and since the early 2000s with I Am the Avalanche. Five albums in, The Horror Show is the one that carries the most weight: written largely in the aftermath of his closest friend’s sudden death, and arriving in Buffalo on December 1 inside one of the city’s smallest rooms.

About the Show

The Horror Show, released April 10, 2026 on Equal Vision Records, is I Am the Avalanche’s first full-length in six years, following 2020’s Dive. The album’s origin is not obscured: approximately 75% of its lyrics were written in the wake of the sudden death of Caruana’s closest friend. The resulting 11 tracks range from dreamy post-hardcore guitar textures to hard-hitting breakdowns and screamed vocals, with melodic hooks that have drawn comparisons to The Menzingers and The Gaslight Anthem rather than typical melodic hardcore peers. The album was produced, engineered, and mixed by their drummer Brett “The Ratt” Romnes at Barbershop Studios, a converted 19th century church on the shore of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey.

New Noise Magazine gave it four out of five stars. NPR described it as “informed by grief but aimed toward healing.” Brooklyn Vegan called it “some of the most impassioned, impactful songwriting” of Caruana’s nearly 30-year career. Guitar World named it an Editors Pick.

Caruana’s framing of what this tour means is unusually direct: “My only hope is that performing these songs on stage will repair the part of my soul that broke during the writing process.” The band’s live show has always run on close-range intensity, with anthemic singalongs and raw crowd engagement that suits a 300-capacity room far better than a hall three times that size would.

Matt Embree (frontman of Rx Bandits and a touring member of Dispatch since 2016) opens the evening. The show is presented by After Dark Presents.
