There is a kind of musical trust that only twenty years of playing together can build, and The Wood Brothers have it. You can hear it in the first takes: several tracks on their ninth studio album, Puff of Smoke, hit the record in the exact form they first existed. “Slow Rise (to the middle)” and “You Choose Me” are the first times the trio played those songs through together, start to finish, and those versions are what made the album. Oliver Wood calls the record “a little bit schizophrenic and eclectic,” and that’s accurate. Latin-inflected acoustic guitar runs into post-jazz percussion; New Orleans brass surfaces in the opening track; a Cuban-inspired rhythm section backs one of the more hymn-like passages. And yet the whole thing holds, grounded in the kind of lyrical wit that invites comparisons to John Prine.
About the Show
Oliver Wood on guitars and vocals, his brother Chris Wood on bass and vocals, and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix bring their 2027 Winter Tour to the Paramount Theatre in Rutland, Vermont on Tuesday, March 9. The run started February 4 in Jackson, Mississippi, moves through the Southeast before coming north through Maryland, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine, and closes March 13 in Rome, New York. The band has been touring behind Puff of Smoke since its August 2025 release on Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers. They earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album for their 2019 record One Drop of Truth, and they arrive in Rutland with a catalog nine albums deep. Chris Wood, before joining Oliver in this project, co-founded Medeski Martin & Wood in 1991, and the avant-garde jazz sensibility from that chapter still surfaces in the band’s less predictable corners.
