Bomba, plena, salsa, merengue: the styles Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra moves through in a single set describe a map of the Afro-Caribbean musical tradition that most ensembles spend an entire career staking out only one corner of. The Bronx-born bassist has been leading this 12-piece orchestra through the full breadth of it since the group formed in Amsterdam, N.Y., in October 1980; the resume reflects those decades in shared stages with Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Arturo Sandoval, Ray Barretto, and Branford Marsalis, performances at two gubernatorial inaugurations and a presidential convention, and a 2015 China tour across Shanghai, Zhouzhou, and Nanjing. This Travers Saturday, the orchestra brings that tradition to Putnam Place for a Travers Night edition of Latin Night.
About the Show
The bill is organized around the Travers Stakes weekend that draws visitors to Saratoga Springs each August, but the evening is built for dancing: doors at 7 p.m., music through 1 a.m. Featured vocalist BoyBoy joins the orchestra. From 7 to 8 p.m., Tango Fusion Dance Company offers free Latin dance lessons (no partner or prior experience required) ahead of the full ensemble. The group’s own description, “an original blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms,” covers salsa, merengue, cha-cha, bomba, plena, and Latin jazz — styles that share roots but make different demands on a rhythm section and a room. A 12-piece ensemble in a 500-capacity club produces a different physical experience than the festival stages or performing arts centers where groups this size more typically appear: the horns are close, the floor receives the full weight of the rhythm section, and there is no comfortable distance from which to observe. The orchestra has earned the New York State Music Achievement Award, the Governor’s Excellence in Arts Award, and seven consecutive Metroland Magazine “Best Of” wins; the HERO 2026 Award is the most recent addition. The event is 21+.
