The Pittsburgh five-piece — Jack Murray (vocals), Jimmy Howell and Ryan Wilkinson (guitars), Kyle O’Connell (drums), and Mike Ernst (bass) — formed in 2015 and has built a catalog that draws comparisons to Knocked Loose, Deftones, Cane Hill, and Thrice. Their fourth album, People Watching, dropped on SharpTone Records in September 2024 and earned the kind of reception that sticks. One reviewer scored it 9.5 out of 10 and called it “a carefully coordinated act of violence, executed with killer precision.” Another described it as “dark, atmospheric, unsettling, and crushingly heavy” — with melodic elements woven in that make the bruising parts hit even harder.
Frontman Jack Murray is the engine: a dynamic vocalist who moves between full-on aggression and a hip-hop-inflected cadence that sets 156/Silence apart from most of their contemporaries. Guitarist Jimmy Howell has said his goal with each record is to bring in at least one element the band has never explored before. On People Watching, they pulled it off.
