Bearly Dead: Grateful Dead Tribute at Putnam Place | October 23, 2026

By Marc Delacroix · August 28, 2026

The Grateful Dead tribute market has never lacked for competition, particularly in the Northeast, where the band’s gravitational pull on the regional jam scene has produced more than a few acts cycling through “Truckin'” with varying degrees of conviction. The meaningful ones share a few markers: a catalog deep enough to avoid repeating themselves, a commitment to improvisation that isn’t just extended solos, and enough nights in the room to develop genuine rapport with the material. Bearly Dead, founded in 2015 and now four years into national touring, meets that bar. The Boston-based quintet launched with a Wednesday night residency at Church of Boston that earned multiple Boston Music Awards nominations for “Live Music Residency of the Year,” then spent several years building a catalog that now exceeds 250 songs, covering the Grateful Dead’s arc from earliest records through final tours. National touring came in October 2022; headline credits since have included Paradise Rock Club, House of Blues Boston, MGM Music Hall Fenway, and the Worcester Palladium.

About the Show

Bearly Dead plays Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs on Friday, October 23, as part of a fall 2026 run that includes stops in Buffalo, Columbus, and Maryland before continuing north to Syracuse and eventually south toward Florida. The five members — Tyler Brooks (drums, vocals), Michael Butler (vocals, percussion), Sarah Elaz (bass), Nick Swift (guitar, vocals), and Kris Yunker (keys/organ/synth, vocals) — play what their materials describe as “a cosmic exploration of the Grateful Dead catalog,” with spontaneous improvisation built into the approach rather than tacked on as an afterthought. That improvisational posture has drawn notable collaborators: guests have included Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Paul Wolstencroft of Slightly Stoopid, and Steve Molitz, who has worked with both Particle and Phil Lesh & Friends; that last credit carries particular weight in Dead circles. In 2018, Jerry Garcia’s “Wolf” guitar appeared at one of their shows. Their most-performed songs (“Shakedown Street,” “Eyes of the World,” and “Jack Straw”) point toward the deep-groove material over the folk-quiet numbers, which should suit a Friday night crowd at a club room.
