Black Flag spent the late 1970s and 1980s building American hardcore from the ground up: relentless touring, an independent label they founded when no existing one would have them, and a lineup that shifted constantly around the fixed point of founding guitarist Greg Ginn. Fifty years on, that last part hasn’t changed. Ginn, now 72, brings the latest iteration of the band through Buffalo on Thursday, September 24 — their first show in this city in seven years.
About the Show
The tour marks the band’s 50th anniversary since their 1976 formation in Hermosa Beach, California. Black Flag is recognized as the first American hardcore band, and Ginn, described by AllMusic as “unquestionably the most influential guitarist to emerge from the late-’70s/early-’80s U.S. hardcore/punk movement,” founded SST Records when no existing label would release the band’s music, shaping not just Black Flag’s catalog but the independent punk ethos for decades.
The 2026 lineup pairs Ginn with musicians in their 20s: vocalist Max Zanelly, bassist David Rodriguez, and drummer Bryce Weston. This is the first comprehensive domestic tour with this configuration, which previously cut its teeth on European shows, West Coast dates, and an April 2026 Coachella appearance before launching this 45-date run on September 3. The tour concludes November 1, with additional 2027 dates already announced. Ginn recruited Zanelly after spotting her singing along at a Black Flag show. “She was the only person I could imagine doing it,” he said. Zanelly described her decision with characteristic directness: “Okay, [expletive] it. Like, when is an opportunity like this going to come in my life ever again?”
Those familiar with the catalog — Damaged, My War, Slip It In, Loose Nut, In My Head — will have their own questions about what this lineup does with it. One reviewer noted the band still carries “that same head swinging and intensity” from their 1980s performances. Whether that holds across a full set is the reason to show up.
Venue & Logistics
Electric City at 433 Pearl Street in downtown Buffalo — the redesigned space formerly known as the Tralf, reopened winter 2024 and named as a homage to Buffalo’s pioneering history in early electric lighting — holds 1,000. That’s an appropriate fit for a band whose intensity has always been a function of proximity. This western New York show is all ages. Doors at 7:00 p.m., show at 8:00 p.m.
