Higher Ground’s Ballroom in South Burlington is the kind of room that earns its reputation on nights like this one. It is a 750-capacity venue on Williston Road that pulls artists who are too interesting for the amphitheater circuit and too good to stay obscure — and on Monday, September 28, Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon takes the stage at 8:00 PM with support from Otto Benson.
About Cate Le Bon
Le Bon has been one of the most quietly essential figures in indie music for well over a decade, and her seventh album, Michelangelo Dying (Mexican Summer, 2025), is the most emotionally direct record she has made. Rolling Stone called it “opaquely alluring and genuinely moving” — a breakup record written in the wreckage of a long relationship, shaped by her relocation from Joshua Tree back to Cardiff, and recorded across multiple locations before being finished in the California desert.
Co-produced with longtime collaborator Samur Khouja, the album layers guitars, saxophones, synthesizers, and filtered vocals into what Le Bon describes as “a machine with a heart.” The collaborators are serious: saxophonist Euan Hinshelwood, pianist Paul Jones, percussionists Dylan Hadley and Valentina Magaletti, and — on the track “Ride” — John Cale of the Velvet Underground, the only outside voice on the record.
Beyond her own work, Le Bon has become one of the most in-demand producers working today, with credits that include co-producing St. Vincent’s Grammy-winning All Born Screaming and work with Wilco, Devendra Banhart, and Horsegirl. Live, her band is known for the way its members “share, swap, harmonize instruments” with “stiletto sharp synchronisation.” That is the kind of detail that makes a Monday night show worth the drive.
Burlington is the second stop of a tight three-date North American run: Chicago on September 25, Higher Ground on the 28th, then Knockdown Center in New York City on September 30. If you are picking one date on this tour, the North Country stop puts you in a room that holds a show like this exactly right.
