The premise of Dark Star Orchestra has always been deceptively simple: pick a night from the Grateful Dead’s 30-year touring history and reproduce it, start to finish, with enough fidelity that the audience feels like it’s recovering something that happened without them. After nearly 30 years and more than 3,400 shows, DSO has long since stopped needing to defend that premise. The Fall 2026 Tour, which brings them to the Palace Theatre on Friday, November 13, arrives with new weight behind it: since Bob Weir’s passing, the band has moved visibly toward stewardship, with the Rex Foundation placed at the center of this entire run.
About the Show
The Albany date falls second in a three-night Northeast sprint: Providence on November 12, Albany on November 13, Boston on November 14. No support act is listed. The format will be what DSO has honed over three decades: a recreation of an actual Dead concert from the band’s touring catalog, setlist undisclosed until the show reveals it, performed with what the band describes as precision and improvisational spirit.
The tour’s centerpiece comes eight days later, on November 21 at The Anthem in Washington, D.C., where DSO stages a Rex Foundation benefit commemorating the 45th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s Reckoning album. The band will recreate a complete three-set show from that era — one acoustic set followed by two electric sets — without announcing the specific concert in advance, restoring the experience of walking into a Dead show blind to what’s coming. Reckoning (1981) captured “a different side of the Dead’s musical language: warm, roots-driven,” drawing on folk, blues, country, and bluegrass traditions. The Albany show carries different programming, but it’s in the same current. Following Weir’s passing, DSO donated to the Rex Foundation, citing a responsibility to carry forward “the spirit of community and philanthropy that Weir championed throughout his life.” That language is doing real work on this tour.
The band’s seven-piece roster includes Jeff Mattson and Rob Eaton on guitars, Rob Barraco on keyboards, Skip Vangelas on bass, Dino English and Rob Koritz on drums, and Lisa Mackey on vocals. Over the years, DSO has hosted six original Grateful Dead members as guests, alongside members of Phish, Warren Haynes, and Steve Kimock.
